Your tires are the only part of your vehicle that actually touches the road. When they are worn out, everything else, your brakes, your steering, your safety systems, becomes less effective. For Iowa drivers dealing with ice, snow, rain, and pothole-riddled roads every year, tire condition matters even more. IC Roadside & Key provides mobile tire installation across Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, and Eastern Iowa. Call (319) 963-2108 to schedule new tires delivered and installed at your location.

The Penny Test

The classic way to check tread depth is the penny test. Insert a penny into a tread groove with Lincoln's head pointing down. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, your tread is below 2/32 of an inch and the tire needs to be replaced immediately. For Iowa's winter conditions, many mechanics recommend replacing tires at 4/32 of an inch for adequate snow and ice traction.

Visible Warning Signs

Uneven Wear Patterns

If one side of a tire is more worn than the other, you likely have an alignment issue. Center wear suggests over-inflation, while edge wear suggests under-inflation. Any uneven pattern means reduced grip and shorter tire life.

Cracks, Bulges, or Blisters

Sidewall damage is serious. Cracks indicate aging rubber, while bulges or blisters mean the tire's internal structure is compromised. These tires can blow out without warning, especially at highway speeds on I-80 or I-380.

Visible Wear Bars

Modern tires have built-in wear indicator bars. These are flat rubber bars that run perpendicular to the tread direction. When the tread wears down to the level of these bars, the tire is done.

Performance Warning Signs

  • Vibration at highway speed — While vibration can indicate alignment or balance issues, it can also mean internal tire damage.
  • Longer stopping distances — If your car takes noticeably longer to stop, worn tread is a likely culprit.
  • Hydroplaning in rain — Tread channels exist to move water away from the contact patch. Worn treads lose this ability.
  • Poor snow and ice traction — This is critical for Iowa drivers. If your car slides or struggles in conditions where it used to handle fine, your tires may be worn beyond safe limits.

Age Matters Too

Even tires with plenty of tread should be inspected carefully after five years and replaced after ten, regardless of appearance. Rubber degrades from UV exposure, ozone, and temperature swings. Iowa's extreme temperature range, from negative 20 in winter to over 100 in summer, accelerates this aging process.
